Rajwant Singh, presently holding many prominent positions in Sikh circles in USA and a renowned
name among the Sikhs all over the world, was born on 18th January 1961 at Calcutta. He had his early
education at Khalsa High School Calcutta. After shifting to USA, he studied at School of Dentistry
George Town University (1989). He started his profession in 1989 by opening his Smile Dental Center
at Maryland. Dr. Rajwant Singh is not only a successful Dentist, but also a prominent social activist, who
has been participating in Sikh community affairs since his early youth. He founded the first Sikh youth
group in 1980 in Washington. Further, he founded Eco-Sikh organization in June 2009 in collaboration
with UN to highlight Sikh environmental thought and activism based on Sikh teachings. He is also the
Chairman of the Sikh council on Religion and Education (SCORE), Communications Director of the Sikh
Human Development Foundation, and Secretary of the Guru Gobind Singh Foundation in Maryland. As
an environmentalist, he made plans for the holy city of Nanded and Amritsar. For Nanded (Hazur Sahib),
he discussed the environmental planning with experts from an international organization called ICLEI who
have so far developed over 1200 cities worldwide, out of which 50 are in South Asia. EcoSikh is playing a
nodal role to bring the Gurdwara Administration and the City Administration of Nanded in facilitating
ICLEI in creating an assessment plan for Nanded and perhaps creating funds from international and
national sources for the top environmental issues of the holy city. Regarding Amritsar also he has similar
plans. He has already publicized the celebrations of Amritsar Foundation day and Gurpurab of Guru Ram
Das as a practice of environment restoration of the holy city. It also has launched the concept of Greening
of Nagar Kirtan which has received a huge appreciation in the Sikh community worldwide. In fact, it is
not only in environmental matters that he takes keen interest, he is focused upon almost all the important
issues relating to Sikhs. He always remains in touch with Sikh leaders and organizations in India and also
keeps a contact with the US Presidents for discussing with them the Sikh issues in America. He was often
invited by President Clinton, President Bush and then President Obama for discussion. He organized the
first ever celebration of Guru Nanak’s Gurpurab at the White House. He has also worked closely with many
elected leaders of US Congress including Hillary Clinton. Dr. Singh founded Sikh Council on Religion and
Education, and after Wisconsin Gurdwara killing he played a bridging role between Sikh community and
White House. He is really a role-model as he is one of the most sought after Sikhs for consultation on not
only Sikh issues, but many global issues also. He currently resides in Washinton, D.C. Metro area (USA)
with his family.
