The Role of Missionary Colleges

After the emergence of various reform movements in the early 19th century, many organizations were started for the propagation of Sikh religion. The propagation of religion means spreading the message of the Masters as enshrined in Sri Guru Granth Sahib and educating the people regarding Sikh tenets, values, history, culture and traditions. The organizations like SGPC and Chief Khalsa Diwan, realizing the importance of Gurbani Singing and spiritual discourses (Katha-Vichar), encouraged a number of persons to become Ragis (Gurbani Singers) and Katha Vachaks (Those who could explain the Sikh concepts). For that purpose, efforts were made to start training centres for these persons. Thus, came into being several missionary colleges, which have played a notable role in producing missionaries.
