Sdn. Phulan Rani

Sdn. Phulan Rani is one of the most distinguished artists of Punjab. She has created several masterpieces in portraits, subjects and landscapes in the medium of water color as well as oil color with amazing proficiency. Her paintings adore some of the important collections in India and Abroad. Whereas she has given memorable portraits of eminent persons like Bhai Vir Singh, Prof. Mohan Singh and Amrita Shergill, she has also the unique distinction of giving an individual collection of 500 miniature paintings of all the Major Schools of art Pahari, Mughal, Chugtai & Bengal school of art i.e. in water color style. Her work on Sikh art done by her in a period of 5 decades from 1945 to 2002 raises her position to that of top artists of the country. Her wonderful art gallery in Amritsar shows Kangra valley paintings, Punjab folk paintings (es Heer Ranjha, Lala Majnu etc) and Raga musical measures paintings personified according to Indian music in typical water color with descriptions, a rare treat for music students. The scholarly poetic company of her life companion S. S. Shamsher Singh who had lent poetic captions to her paintings was very inspiring. Her love for religion is evidenced by her 150 paintings on the lives of Sikh Gurus available in a book form also. She has also written some other books, the latest being ‘Viscous of Beauty’ (was released by president of India) which have been highly appreciated. Two of her books won state awards. The great artist, who has won several honors and awards, and has been a role model for a large number of artists and art lovers, now in her nineties, lives with the family of her son at E Block Ranjit Avenue, Amritsar, wherein is situated her great art gallery museum.
