Uttam Singh

Uttam singh, born on May 25TH 1948, belongs to a devout Sikh family dedicated to Music, especially Gurbani Kirtan Singing. Following in the footsteps of his father, who was a Sitar player, Uttam singh learned Tabla and western Violin, and started his career as a Violinist at the age of 12. He played Violin for major film music composers including Naushad, Roshan, Madan Mohan, C. Ramchandra and Sachin Dev Burman. Later, he became the main violinist for S D Burman’s son, Rahul Dev Burman. S. Uttam singh’s next step on the ladder of success was that of music arranging. He along with another musician Jagdish arranged Music for over 65 Films in several Indian languages. These films included major Rajshri Productions hits, Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Koun. Later on the duo worked as Music directors for several films. After the death of Jagdish, uttam singh continued to compose music independently. His most notable film as a music director was Yash Chopra’s Dil To Pagal Hai. He also composed music for many other films including Hum Tumpe Marte Hain, Dushman, Farz and Pyaar Diwana Hota Hai. He also composed music for Anil Sharma’s Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (20010 and later Hero-Love Story of a Spy. Honored for his outstanding contributions to film music by many institutions like screen, and ZEE group, he has been conferred the best flimfare music director award in 1997 and 2002 for his films Dil To Pagal Hai and Gadar: Ek Prem Katha respectively. In addition, he has won Name and Fame for his several devotional and Miscellaneous Albums and programmes. As a Sikh, he believes in Gurmat way of living and is eager to permot devotional and Punjabi music. It is also his ardent desire to produce a film on Sikh Religion to propagate the Sikh identity and teachings of the Masters. His achievements have indeed made all the Punjabi’s, particularly the Sikhs proud.
