Jaspinder Narula

Jaspinder Narula, famous Punjabi and bollywood playback singer, was born on 14th November 1970 in Delhi. Being the daughter of S.K.S. Narula, Music Director, she was brought up in an atmosphere in which she developed her love for singing. Even when she was a student of Guru Harkishan Public School, India Gate Delhi, she used to sing and became popular. In her early life, her preference was for Bhajan, Sufi compositions and Punjabi Folk. She completed her B.A Hons in Music from Indraprastha College for Women. She finished PhD in Hindustani classical music from Delhi University in 2008. She moved to Mumbai at the advice of noted music director Kalyanji who heard her at the private gathering in Delhi and asked his son and music director, Viju Shah, to give her break in films like Master, Aar Ya Paar and Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan(1998). She shot to fame after the duet “Pyar to hona hi tha” with Remo Fernandesfrom the 1998 film Pyar To Hona Hi Tha for which she won the 1999Filmfare Best Female Playback Award. The other notable films she has sung in include Mission Kashmir, Mohabbatein, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustaniand Bunty Aur Babli. In addition to singing for the films, she gives stage performances all over the world. In 2008, she won the title of India’s Best Live Performer in the NDTV Imagine singing reality series, Dhoom Macha De (2008). Since then she has won a number of honors and rewards. Her popularity as a playback singer makes her a role model singer. Over and above, the fact that she is also a singer of Sufi music, as well as Gurbani and other Sikh religious music, makes all the Sikhs proud. Many of her Gurbani compositions are heard in Sikh houses with devotion. Let us pray that she may attain further heights in singing in the years to come.
